Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in America, is a rapper and actress. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has won the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark, the state of New Jersey. She was also raised in her family's Baptist Church. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and kind in Arabic was handed by her aunt when she was eight. Latifah's height of 5'10" allowed her to be a formidable forward during high school. in a school show, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah became part of the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a team of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an example of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. The track caught the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
